Michael hated working nights at the 24-hour supermarket.

The travelling was tedious; it took an hour each way on the bus, and getting home before dawn was tricky, especially during summer.

Then there were the customers.

Michael knew people shopped at night, but he wasn’t prepared for how weird they would be. People bought jars of coffee at midnight. Stoners rolled in at three to buy cakes. People often just wandered round in a daze. One night, Michael was sure he saw Mothman in the toiletries section.

Still, beggars couldn’t be choosers; there weren’t many places a vampire could work.
