The call came several minutes past four. Gabriel groped for the phone, rubbing sleep from their eyes. “Hello?”

There was nothing but silence on the other end.

“Hello? Who’s there?”

The empty line stretched on until the caller hung up. Gabriel stared at their phone in confusion before burying their head back into the pillow, groaning. It was the third time that week they’d been woken by a nocturnal phone call, and it was starting to mess with their sleep schedule.

Turning over, Gabriel tried to get back to sleep, hoping the calls weren’t related to the crows gathering outside.
