In the village where I grew up, there’s several covens of witches who protect us, who tend to the sick with their spells, who visit the ill with their herbs. A witch’s main power is knowledge; they know the safe paths through the forest, and they know the language of plants, and they know the names of every living thing. Names are important. Names can hold secrets.

Witchcraft is considered a valued career. To be a witch is to have respect, even if you aren’t particularly liked, and apprenticeships are highly sought after and coveted by many a young person.
