The old house, surrounded by a large fairy ring, sat at the top of the hill just out of town. It hadn’t been lived in for years; its garden was wildly overgrown and its windows were smashed. Some said it was cursed while others said it was haunted.

Every few years there would be a council proposal to knock the house down and replace it with a block of flats or a shopping mall. Each time, the proposal was listened to, the council members would nod their heads and murmur agreeably, and the house would remain exactly where it was.
